WORDS BY BIANCA O’NEILL.
We’ve seen the monoblocking trend (dressing in a single colour or tone) continue through to 2021, but this year we’re taking it a step further with something fashion insiders are calling ‘head to toe dressing’. So, what exactly does that mean? Well, it’s all about choosing a single trend, print or fabric, and styling your look from top to bottom.
Whether it’s a single print in matching separates, or an all-leather look, head to toe dressing can be easy to put together without the morning ‘what am I going to wear’ struggle – but there are some styling pitfalls you need to look out for. I joined Emporium Melbourne stylist and Creative Director at Style By Us and Them, Karinda Mutabazi, to chat all about how to style head to toe dressing for your everyday look.
One of the most challenging head-to-toe dressing trends this season is all-over print – but it doesn’t have to be as scary as you might think, Karinda tells me. “I know that for some, all over prints can be daunting, but you can work up to it gradually. Start with a print in a muted or a pastel tone (like this Marimekko option). This still gives you an eye-catching impact, but in a more subtle way."
In terms of styling, keep the rest of the outfit simple – don’t be tempted to over-complicate it by adding more details. “The key thing to remember is that the print is the hero of the outfit,” says Karinda, “so let the print speak for itself. When looking at accessories pair a head-to-toe print with a complimentary basic – shoe, bag, tee, etc – to complete the look.”
We loved this Marimekko jacket and jean print set, with Viktoria & Woods boots.
Another potentially challenging look popping up this season is leather on leather (or its corresponding vegan options). “Head to toe leather is the statement of the season,” says Karinda. “When looking for matching sets consider the thickness/softness of the leather, as this will dictate how it sits on the body.”
One of the things to keep in mind when looking for leather pieces is the quality and finish; be careful pairing shiny leather pieces with muted, textured leather or leatherette options. It may be best to buy leather sets at the same retailer, to avoid clashing textures or colours.
When styling, Karinda says it’s important to keep your shape in mind to avoid looking overwhelmed: “Leather is a bulky fabric to wear so if you are planning on tucking in a shirt or jacket, go for a thinner or softer option that will give you that flexibility. If you prefer a more structured look, a boxy leather shacket, paired with a pleat-front pant or culotte is the way to go. As always, you need to think about lengths that best compliment your body shape – be it crop, midi or longline, there is something for everyone."
We loved this Manning Cartel all-leather look in on-trend honey brown.
If you’d like to try the trend in a more casual, pared-back way, try monoblocking (wearing all one colour or tone). This season we’ve seen wardrobe essentials like sweatsuits rendered in luxe materials or super-soft knits. "It all comes down to the fabric choices when you are aiming to nail the monoblocking look,” says Karinda.
Upscaling your fabric choices is the best way to keep your head to toe weekend pieces looking sleek rather than sloppy. “Swap out your simple cotton track sets for a luxe matching set in a fabric like cashmere, wool, statin or silk. These will last you for many seasons, and elevate your look with a little texture or shine."
We loved this Jac + Jack outfit, featuring their grey soft denim pant, jumper, and longline cardi/coat, paired with Seed sneakers.
With the utility trend still going strong through to A/W21, it’s a great option to try under the head to toe dressing umbrella. Be careful choosing styles that borrow from military inspiration, and look for more subtle nods to the trend to avoid looking costume-y.
“Understated hardware is the key to nailing the head-to-toe utility look,” says Karinda. “Trade your flashy gold buttons for gunmetal, brushed silver or a fabric covered option – and look for details like cords, ties, belts, ruching, and synching that add shape and texture.”
When styling a head-to-toe utility look, choosing a single colour might help to keep it clean, and minimal layering will help to avoid adding too much bulk to your outfit. “Subtlety is key,” Karinda tells me, “and the devil is in the fine details for this one.”
We loved this DIIDA military-inspired dress and coat, paired with a simple pair of Oxford ankle boots.

“It’s hard to imagine winter without the humble knit. Knitwear often forms the cosy, trusty base of our wardrobe as the weather cools, so it’s essential to know what to look for when picking up a new favourite.”
“As we return to the office in 2021, it’s time to pack up the trackpants and transition into something more upmarket. Yep, that means suiting is back – but for the upcoming chilly season, this doesn’t mean you have to compromise on comfort.”
“Each winter, the boot is a staple for your cold-weather wardrobe – and this year, a raft of cool new styles are demanding a little space in your 2021 line-up. From comfortable options like easy-to-wear flats and chunky heels to on-trend detailing to help you stand out from the pack, there's something to match every outfit.”
“There’s more than one way to introduce warmth into your wardrobe as the cooler months approach. Add shades of coffee, latte, and chocolate to your line-up this season, along with tan, ochre, and caramel, for a modern take on cold weather dressing.”
“From classic staples with a twist, to new styles and easy-to-wear options, this season’s coats are all about staying comfortable, whilst ensuring versatility when pairing them back with your existing wardrobe go-tos.“
