WORDS BY BIANCA O’NEILL.
Each winter, the boot is a staple for your cold-weather wardrobe – and this year, a raft of cool new styles are demanding a little space in your 2021 line-up. From comfortable options like easy-to-wear flats and chunky heels to on-trend detailing to help you stand out from the pack, there's something to match every outfit.
I chatted to Emporium Melbourne stylist and Creative Director at Style By Us and Them, Karinda Mutabazi, about the best ways to wear this season's new boot trends, as well as some tips about what to look out for when shopping for your very own pair.
Here are four Autumn/Winter 2021 boot trends for you to try.
If you were dreading a return to restrictive clothing and sky-high heels after a year of WFH, you’re in luck: flat-heeled boots are here to save the day (and your feet!).
Try styling them with a casual straight leg jean and tee for a casual and comfy weekend look, or take inspo from Karinda and pair them with a laid-back suit for a modern workwear look.
“Flat boots are the defining staple for AW21”, says Karinda. “The world is having a flat shoe revolution and I am all for it! They can literally be paired with any of your favourite AW outfits. Try them with your favourite dress/skirt and a pair of tights to turn your summer faves into versatile all-season wear.”
We loved these Scotch & Soda lace-up combat-style boots for an edgy take on the flat boot trend.
If you’re trying out the earthy, mono blocking look this season, don’t forget your feet. A series of beautiful boots have landed in-store in every neutral shade from coffee through to latte and beyond.
Pick up a pair in a lush textural finish, like suede, to add interest. Fabric boots are also great for comfort, as they move with the body and flex as you walk.
Karinda has some great tips for choosing the right tone: “Most importantly go with a hue that is complementary to your skin tone – think of it like matching your make-up colour.”
“This is true for all earthy tonal dressing in general; look for tones with either a red or yellow base depending on what works best with your complexion. This will also help to match your boots with the rest of the earth-toned items in your wardrobe.”
We loved these Scanlan Theodore sock-style heeled ankle boots in on-trend earthy colours like coffee and latte.
After JW Anderson set the internet alight last year with their chain detail slip-on, footwear has started to trend toward the bold.
This winter, try adding a pair of seasonal boots to the wardrobe, featuring quirky details like a chunky chain, a bold colour choice, or even a pair in a two-tone effect. Wear them with something classic to keep all eyes on the boots.
“‘Chunky' is the word that best describes this season’s boots trend,” says Karinda. “Think sole, heels, and details like chains, buckles, and even down to the laces. In a sea of similar styles, I always look for the one that has a point of difference - seek out textures such as suede, crock, snake, and even shearling as defining details.”
We loved these two-toned Scotch & Soda mid-heel ankle boots for a fun twist on your usual boot.
Stiletto heels are out in 2021 – if you’re after a bit of height, but want to stay on trend, try a chunky heeled boot this Autumn/Winter.
From mid and low block heels to classic boot silhouettes you can wear forever (with the added comfort of a little extra stability), this has to be the easiest boot trend to try this winter.
Karinda tells me it’s all about practicality in 2021. “This season is all about stylish comfort. With the world coming out of hibernation, practical and functional style reigns supreme. The chunky sole and block heel that we are seeing in boots this season is the perfect example of this.”
We loved these classic olive leather ankle boots from Mimco. They are designed to match perfectly back with almost any outfit, with the added benefit of an easy-to-wear block heel.

“As we return to the office in 2021, it’s time to pack up the trackpants and transition into something more upmarket. Yep, that means suiting is back – but for the upcoming chilly season, this doesn’t mean you have to compromise on comfort.”
“There’s more than one way to introduce warmth into your wardrobe as the cooler months approach. Add shades of coffee, latte, and chocolate to your line-up this season, along with tan, ochre, and caramel, for a modern take on cold weather dressing.”
“From classic staples with a twist, to new styles and easy-to-wear options, this season’s coats are all about staying comfortable, whilst ensuring versatility when pairing them back with your existing wardrobe go-tos.“
