AW/21 Emporium Edit | Earth Tones

WORDS BY BIANCA O’NEILL.

Channel warmth this winter with this season’s earthy tones.

There’s more than one way to introduce warmth into your wardrobe as the cooler months approach – and this week, it’s all about the warm, earth-coloured tones trending for Autumn/Winter ’21. Add shades of coffee, latte, and chocolate to your line-up this season, along with tan, ochre, and caramel, for a modern take on cold weather dressing.

I sat down with Emporium Melbourne stylist and Creative Director at Style By Us and Them, Karinda Mutabazi, to chat about all the cosy colours on offer in-store – and how best to wear them.

Utility Beyond Khaki

EARTH TONE TREND #1

Utility is trending again – but this year, we’ve moved away from traditional military detailing in khakis and browns, and towards a more modern take on the trend. Look for function over form here; it’s all about pocket details, comfort fabrics, and all manner of ties, zips, and toggles.

“Modern utility dressing is a long way from the heavy-duty military style it takes it inspiration from,” Karinda tells me. “Sleek and functional silhouettes that feature military design elements – such as cargo pockets, epaulets, and even parachute-style – are trending.”

In terms of trending colours, your latest road trip may have provided the perfect inspiration, as it seems the Aussie landscape has acted as a muse for our fabulous local designers of late. Karinda agrees: “This season you will find great examples in all the clay tones of the Australian desert – but look further afield to Eucalyptus greens and desert sky blues.”

We loved this parachute-inspired Oroton cinch-waist dress, paired with a neutral, suede Scanlan and Theodore boot.

Retro Colourways

EARTH TONE TREND #2

As we move away from monochrome toward earthy shades like mustard, ochre, and chocolate, it’s the perfect opportunity to channel styling from decade’s past. Avoid looking like you’re attending a costume party by adding modern touches, like a pair of slick sneakers, and keep your hair and makeup neutral.

“There is always a trend toward era-specific design, and this A/W is no exception,” says Karinda. “Think That ’70s Show big collars, column high waist pants – or even flares – and shirts with exaggerated collars.”

“The earthy tones play right into the era, mixing tonal mustards, tans, and oranges with textures like suede, rib knits, and jacquard fabrics with metallic details.”

We loved this Sandro wide-leg pant and button-down top in delicious mustard and tan shades, for a casual weekend look.

Luxe Leisurewear

EARTH TONE TREND #3

As we approach winter, it’s no surprise we’d all like to return to our cosy WFH track pants – but there is a better way. Thankfully, this season, we’ve seen some super cute leisure sets in warm, tonal beiges and butters to help elevate your weekend go-to. Karinda tells me that we can level up our leisurewear by paying closer attention to our fabrication choices.

“Tonal leisurewear (made famous by the Kardashian/West empire) has now become the must-have wardrobe staple,” says Karinda. “The key to nailing this look is choosing a lux knit over a cotton classic. Look for cashmere and merino blends as they will stand the test of time and keep you warmest in the winter months.”

Karinda tells me we should stick with one shade in our leisurewear to keep it sophisticated and modern. “There is something about a single colour en masse that turns heads, and gives you a polished look without much effort. Luxe leisurewear can be paired with your favourite chunky boot, heel, or mum sandal for those in-between days.”

We loved this Camilla and Marc set in an easily wearable neutral tone, paired with this season’s must-have mom slide.

Silky Silhouettes

EARTH TONE TREND #4

Keeping it casual doesn’t have to be about sleek sweats – we can also take inspiration from the bedroom for A/W. Silky separates are trending this season, and it’s hard to imagine a downside to wearing your PJs out of the house.

“Pyjama dressing is more than just an aspirational style, it is the ultimate in comfort dressing for life,” says Karinda. “Done well it can be the look that takes you from day to night with ease. This oversized style can be balanced out with a fitted knit or rib tank that shows off your natural silhouette.”

Warm aubergine, cinnamon, and mocha shades look delicious in textural fabrics that add a luxe sheen for nighttime. “This style is all about layering tonal colours in fabrics with a bit of shine,” Karinda tells me. “Look for silks, satins, or even velvets. Wear this look with a sandal or loafer in the day, and add some chunky gold jewellery and a heel to take you into the evening.”

We loved this Jac + Jack silky two-piece set, paired with a simple Jac + Jack singlet underneath. The chic sandal featured with the look is by Witchery.
