We sent resident fashion stylist, Karinda Mutabazi into PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival, to get a sneak peek of our Emporium Melbourne fashion designers showing at Runway 2.
Stylist Jana Pokorny weaved optimism and joy into last nights Harper’s Bazaar runway taking us on whimsical journey of discovery. A quiet confidence, refined elegance and a grounded sophisticated edge that brought the collections together. The minimal and chic approach to the styling allowing for a deeper appreciation and celebration of the designs.
The fabrics, subtle prints, unique block colours were the hero’s of the night. The relaxed and flowing linens and silks sweeping down the runway with effortless ease. Unsurprisingly it seems like designers have drawn inspiration the Australian landscape; rich caramels, burnt oranges, ochres, reds, anchored with charred blacks. These bold colours are softened with the colours of the coast line, sands of whites and cream and sprawling blue skies with crystal clear aquamarines waters. Botanical prints and subtle feminine dealing met with a the modern silhouetted of purposeful masculine tailoring, celebrate femininity and a new sense of freedom.
I know that in Melbourne people tend towards the safety of a black outfit, and if this is you, there was certainly some stunning options for you to choose from…. But this season choose a colour.
The freedom and joy of creativity and togetherness is celebrated in the colours of the season. Colour blocking is a key feature that has been brought through from the clothing to the accessorises. The fearless colour on colour was done in a more muted way by Aje with the statement dress paired with the olive leather clutch (or for the bolder choice the red) with the iconic irregular shaped hardware that we have come to know and love from AJE.
Oroton’s take was less structured with a flowing red gown, paired with the perfectly matched red shoulder bag to complete the look. I have to say though that the aquamarine teal colour that is featured in Bassike’s collection this season has stolen my heart.
This season is all about a sublet print; Elegant botanicals and subtle abstract prints broke up the elegant colour blocking of the collections. Stunning botanical inspired prints from Oroton, giving a sense of freedom in the great outdoors. The more modern and abstract approach was taken by Viktoria and Woods, and Bassike who’s seasonal print features abstract rendering of line-draw faces by local artist Amy Hunter.
Butterflies feathered heavily as a reoccurring theme throughout the show, metamorphosis and a symbol transformation and hope for the season to come. The silhouettes and prints paying homage to the beautiful winged creatures. Oroton’ season stamp print features the Darwin style scientific sketches of the butterfly.
Whilst Aje’s whole collection explores the concept of ‘The Butterfly Effect’ or Chaos Therory, with silhouettes that mimic the shape of the butterfly.
Relaxed tailoring and pyjama style dressing is the perfect thing to ease out of the home life and back into the world. The rich silks, linens and wools are an enticing version of chic yet comfortable style. A smooth transition from your regular house tracksuits into an elegant and effortlessly chic.
Layering featuring outerwear of soft trench coats paired with wider leg pants neutral and soft tones are understated yet eye catching.
The relaxed and free pyjama style is full of joyful anticipation of the energy and creativity that comes with our renewed freedoms. The key to this style is the uniform colouring and fabric choice, look for silks for the ultimate in lux comfort. If you prefer a more subtracted approach then Vik and Woods have you covered with a stunning tailored pant that can be paired with a cosy knit and still gives that relaxed style, but in a more contained way.
Relaxed tailoring saw boxy blazers paired with flowing dresses and knit pants, adding the element of bold colour and colour blocking for a more striking effect. Pairing these with a flat shoe helps to keep you more grounded and allows freedom of movement as we readjust to our hectic lives.
