Finnish design house Marimekko celebrates the Year of the Snake with a limited-edition capsule collection with Chengdu-based artist Xuetong Wang, whose dreamlike universe adorns Marimekko’s functional everyday objects from clothing to homeware. The special Year of the Snake capsule collection combines Wang’s flowing, organic artistry with Marimekko’s design ethos of making art available for everyone.
In the Chinese zodiac, people who have been born during year of the Snake are often described as individuals with wisdom, rich inner world and a great deal of luck and prosperity. These characteristics have inspired Wang’s artworks that showcase depictions of mythological Chinese creatures. Both Wang's work and Marimekko's designs are known for their carefree spirit, happy contradictions and love for everyday life. With this collection, Marimekko and Wang aim to spread joy and optimism, sending best wishes to all.
“In Chinese culture, seeing a snake or having a dream about snakes means good luck, and this time of the year is significant for making wishes and welcoming good luck. The inspiration of the characters in this capsule collection is related to this traditional culture. The first one is the lucky snake with star elements on, the second one is a wish fountain as her friend, the third one is a tall wish tree, which is a traditional Chinese way to make a wish by hanging wishes on. The last one is a shooting star. As for the background, snakes are sometimes considered as rain deities and always associated with water and rain, which is why I have added some relevant elements such as raindrops, a gift-wrapped cloud, shining moons and stars”, describes Xuetong Wang.
“Marimekko has a long tradition of collaborating with artists around the world to co-create collections that celebrate personal creativity and the art of printmaking. We are excited to partner with Xuetong Wang for the Year of the Snake. Wang's illustrations create a happy contradiction in their abstract interpretations of Chinese deities and mythological creatures illustrated through the modern, fresh style that Wang's work represent”, says Satu Maaranen, Head Designer for Kioski, Ready-to-Wear and Bags & Accessories at Marimekko.
The limited-edition capsule collection includes two sweatshirts and two T-shirts with matching accessories: a tote bag, a coin purse and a utility purse. Wang’s artwork is also featured in selected Marimekko home products, which include a set of small Oiva plates and a matching coffee mug. The limited-edition items are the perfect gift for loved ones, or they can be cherished for oneself during this joyous time and for years to come.
