No one can lay claim to gold jewellery quite like Cleopatra (or for that matter, the Ancient Egyptians in general). Society may have been hierarchical, but a penchant for gold jewellery seemed to unite everyone. Given as gifts, offerings and rites of passage, ancient gold jewellery typically adorned necks as collars and amulet necklaces. They were ornate and intricate — photos scarcely do them justice. It’s a good thing, then, that until October 6, you can see a collection of these incredible pieces IRL at the National Gallery of Victoria.
Pharaoh, an exhibition presented in collaboration with the British Museum, offers a unique and immersive glimpse into the world of the Ancient Egyptians. Over 500 objects fill the NGV’s hallowed halls, from sculptures and coffins to exquisite jewellery. Taking over the entire Ground Floor of the NGV, Pharaoh is nothing short of awe-inspiring, whether you consider yourself a history buff or are just there for the jewels (the latter of which would be totally fine with us).
Expect to leave the exhibition inspired to add some gleaming finery to your own collection. Below, we’ve rounded up five spectacular gold pieces you can shop at Emporium. Cleopatra, who?

Amulets — pieces that safeguarded their wearer from evil — were all the rage in Ancient Egypt. Angus and Coote’s evil eye bracelet is the modern way to stay protected from bad vibes.

Sometimes you need a simple gold bangle to wear everyday. This sleek piece from Lukfook is the perfect piece to layer up with other pieces, or just as spectacular worn alone.
