A VR Dance Experience
Experience a bold new Virtual Reality immersive experience at Emporium Melbourne with a dance battle with four crews, who will invite you to become a participant!
In collaboration, between choreographer Gideon Obarzanek and filmmaker Matthew Bate and commissioned by Arts Centre Melbourne for the inaugural Asia Topa, this Virtual Reality experience puts the viewer in the middle of a street dance battle featuring artists from the upcoming venue XO State.
Setting the scene:
In the suburb of Liverpool in western NSW, a group of dancers from a diverse cultural and LGBT backgrounds are about to throwdown in a dance battle like no other. Our guide in this immersive experience through the streets of Liverpool is Philippine- Australian Bhenji Ra. Bhenji (a featured artist in XO State) is a dancer and ‘Mother’ of the House of Slé – a queer dance group comprising of trans-girls who specialise in Vogue and ballroom. Bhenji introduces us to 3 other crews – Project Queens a Polynesian crew of Samoan Fa’afafine girls who mix traditional and contemporary dance, Zealous – an all-girl dance gang and Roman’s a young hip hop crew. As Bhenji tells us, these crews use dance as a way of community building and of celebrating their cultural and sexual diversity in the often isolated suburbs.
Mirroring a significant focus of XO State, this immersive virtual reality experience showcases Asian Australian artists who are pushing the boundaries of their art-form. This is a limited experience not to be missed.
