Coach Lights Up Shanghai
14 May 2019
Debuted in Shanghai to mark Coach's 15th year in China, this collection channels the glam world of 1970s rock-and-roll elegance and showcases playful Rexy-inspired artwork by local creatives.
Meet the artists
To celebrate Coach’s first fashion show in China and to give this collection a truly special feel, Stuart Vevers tapped four local creatives from Shanghai’s contemporary art and music scene to reinterpret their dinosaur mascot, Rexy.
Well-known for creating oversized sculptures that explore his observations of Chinese culture, Jianguo collaborated with Vevers to create a photo version of Rexy that has a distorted, slightly vintage movie feel.
Jingyi is a contemporary ink painter and abstract artist who takes traditional Chinese subject matter—trees, scholar rocks and landscapes—and transforms them into 3D works in resin. His soft take on Rexy is an authentic ink drawing.
Music collective Yeti Out bridges music, art and fashion from the east and west with their series of pop-up raves and record releases. Mixing Rexy with Chinese characters, their unique take was inspired by 1980s rave music motifs.
Known for his work with major cultural institutions and companies, graphic designer Guang Yu’s typographical creations push the limits of modern Chinese graphic design. For Coach, he played with Rexy’s teeth to create a graffiti-like roaring motif that incorporates our Coach “C”.
