Discover SS21 with Kate Gaskin

This season we spoke to seasoned fashion stylist and native Melburnian, Kate Gaskin, to get sneak peek of the upcoming trends this summer and some simple steps on how to wear them.

Kate Gaskin regularly styles runway shows and events such as Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. She has also styled International personalities Coco Rocha, Kate Upton and actor Adrien Brody.

Timeless meet Tailored

The easiest way to put together a chic, versatile and timeless look is by incorporating key tailored pieces into your wardrobe, like this vest and pant combo from Australian designer brand Camilla and Marc.

A well-cut blazer or vest - a core must-have item - can serve many functions, easily transforming from day to night, giving you maximum wear. Dress it down with jeans, a tee and sneakers for day, or pop it over a little black dress with heels for instant evening impact. Choose wisely as the right blazer is a great investment piece that will easily pay for itself.

Tailoring has had a modern update this season, with unconventional silhouettes and hues in vogue. Skorts (yes, those shorts that look like a skirt) wide leg ‘man-style’ pants and vests (traditional waist-length, fitted silhouettes or oversized and longline shapes) are stepping out in seasonal pastel and muted tones. Just look to Camilla and Marc’s latest collection to achieve this trending look.

Complete the ‘modern-tailored’ look with the addition of great statement accessories like a Georg Jensen brooch and bangle or Celine sunglasses from Sunglass Hut. Tough leather accents, like this stunning bag from Oroton, or sporty highlights offset the minimalist feel and inject personality into your outfit. Think of tailored pieces as the perfect blank canvas and anything is possible!

Sophisticated meet Street

Fashion should be about having fun, expressing your personality and telling your ‘visual story’.

I am a relatively simple dresser, however I like to have one unexpected element in the mix. For instance, if I’m going for a tailored look, I might style it back with a pair of sandals from Camper - classic for both men and women - or if I’m wearing my boyfriend jeans and slouchy tee, I’d turn up the volume with a pair of heels.

To be honest, a lot of it comes down to comfort - I always like to feel comfortable in what I’m wearing, which tends to mean my looks have a ‘considered-casual’ feel about them. In order to offset this and avoid lockdown dressing all over again, I’ll add an element of formal, or vice versa. A pair of tailored pants from Hugo Boss or a crisp shirt from Ralph Lauren can be the perfect addition to enhance your look. Don’t be afraid to experiment a bit when it comes to mixing streetwear pieces with your more formal or tailored pieces; it’s a great way to maximise dressier wardrobe pieces that might be sitting around waiting for a rare black tie event. I love a casual touch such as a bucket from Super Glue Store or an oversized sweater from Adidas for that casual chic look.

If you’re not confident to mix up your look or prefer a more conservative approach, one pretty fail-safe tip I have is to keep the colour palette quite minimal - this simplifies things and allows the design details of the garments to do all the talking.
