This season we spoke to seasoned fashion stylist and native Melburnian, Kate Gaskin, to get sneak peek of the upcoming trends this summer and some simple steps on how to wear them.
Kate Gaskin regularly styles runway shows and events such as Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. She has also styled International personalities Coco Rocha, Kate Upton and actor Adrien Brody.
Dressing for an Aussie summer is about keeping cool and dressing with ease. I think Australians have an inherent way of putting their summer wardrobe together that is fuss-free, utilitarian and practical, but with a side of chic simplicity thrown in.
For women that may mean a simple summer dress, but the devil is in the detail. It may be a longline silhouette that moves with the breeze, or a flowing skirt that has a deliberate elegance yet a wearable practicality. To achieve this, look no further than a statement patterned dress or skirt from AJE, with billowing details and the utmost attention to detail. A pair of chic flat sandals from Camper can give an edge to a casual day ensemble, but are also comfortable enough for a full day at work or chasing after the kids.
Layering and accessories are a great way to add flair to a summer ensemble. A pair of shorts and a bralette can be completely transformed with an open shirt or bold necklace. Look to Oroton’s latest collection, featuring beautiful summer prints and statement gold jewellery, to compete a head-to-toe look.
Let’s get one thing straight - casual doesn’t mean boring. To me, what defines a casual look from a dressy piece is fabrication. For example you may have a longline gown-style silhouette, but style it in a matte cotton or jersey fabric and it instantly has a casual sensibility.
Casual summer looks are easily achieved, and can be given an added element of interest through pattern and textured fabrics.
A simple tee and shorts look can go from drab to fab through the choice of interesting fabric textures, colours, patterns or quirky silhouettes. Layering is also a great way to inject interest into a casual look. A sleeveless trench can be layered over a simple dress or shorts to add an instant fashionability.
What I’m also loving? A jumpsuit. Both practical and stylish, and more climate appropriate for the Australian summer. The new Bassike range is perfect to achieve these looks with modern tie dye patterns, interesting silhouettes and a modern, oversized fit.
